10 things architects only learn when they leave college

We are all passionate about Architecture. I'm sure you are too! Many alumni architects graduate each year and graduate from the college in the eagerness to design, design, and design. But the real world, the one outside the classroom looks quite different from what you imagine when you're just listening to the teacher talking, doing jobs and making fun of people. A lot is only learned out of college, in the race and various problems can arise.
So today, you will know 10 things that architects do not learn in college. But the intention is not to discourage no, it is precisely to demonstrate that these situations exist so that you can already prepare and live very well of the profession you have always dreamed of.
1 - Architect is a multiple professional
During graduation, his only concern is to be a great architect - and preferably recognized. But in real life, you will need to gather various skills and professions. In addition, you should know how to make a tasty coffee, be a good accountant not to let finances go red and who risk a little astrology to guess what the customer is actually imagining?
2 - You'll miss your annoying teacher
Think of your most boring teacher! Yes, the one who puts a defect in all his projects and works. Well, your longing for him will be so much that you may even go visit him for college after graduating. The reason? He is nothing close to his future clients! Your boring teacher is an architect who corrects you based on the knowledge, the client will correct you because he thinks he is more an architect than you.
3 - Architect life is not life of glamor
In the popular imagination, architect's life is full of luxuries, trips to get to know iconic works around the world, a waste of refinement when invited to the night party in the mansion of two thousand square meters that you designed for that rich client. Square is even if you imagine it so! Most of the architects, especially at the beginning of their career, really have to worry about paying interest on the special check at the bank and thank them when there is work to visit under the scorching sun.
4 - You will learn how to hunt ... clients
And it will not be easy. As soon as they leave college they will rain friends and relatives request "ideas", a "draft" and other (unbearable) things more. Of course, all this usually for free, incidentally, the relative says that "makes a point of paying". After that, you will need to chase after real customers, the one who will put our daily bread at your table.

5 - Learn how to create demand for your products
Do not expect the customer's need to offer their work. That is when the multiprofessional architect comes in again. You must learn to add value to what you sell to your audience, demonstrate how valid you will be to hire a professional architectural service.
6 - Embracing the world is not feasible
Above all, set a course for your career. Do not go around designing everything: from luxury homes to popular housing, from dance clubs to churches. Find your niche and focus on it. Okay, I agree that at the beginning it is difficult and what falls into the net is fish, but over time the best thing is to select and prioritize a line of work.
7 - Friends of college, great friends and ... future competitors
We do not want to plant discord in this capitalist and competitive world, but it is reality. But what good would it be, if it were just your roommates, then you would be in profit. In fact, even to tell in the fingers how many of his colleagues will be competitors to the point of "putting fear." However, only in Greater São Paulo, about a thousand new architects are graduating each year. Imagine in Brazil all?
There are a lot of good people on the market, there are a lot of bad people who think they are good and there are a lot of people who could be at the top, but it is not by sloppiness or by believing that college is the only source of knowledge. Internships, travel and mainly courses should be part of the routine of newly graduated students and architects. Nowadays, the market does not accept those who do not know how to work with architectural software (AutoCad, 3DsMax with VRay, REVIT, UNREAL, among others). So in this case, investing in yourself and learning all that is the key word

8 - Do not expect recognition
It is, in the minds of many people, the architect is there drinking his champagne at the mansion's opening night party. But the man who designed the mansion was not the architect, the engineer. Yes, even the customer will answer the cell phone in front of you and say, "love, I'm here in the engineer, I'll be right back." Ah, when they do not ask: "But do you design the house too or do I take this part to the engineer? "

9 - Understand and recognize your audience
Well, in the face of it all, play your advertising role. Explain to people what an architect does and try to feel what they expect from an architect. A good tip is when talking with your lay clients (yes, they are lay, even swearing to know everything about construction), speak Portuguese and not architecture. Explain everything as clearly and simply as possible. Both will thank you.
10 - You are an entrepreneur
You can be an employee of a company or have your own office. In both cases you are an entrepreneur. To do so, you need entrepreneurial attitudes to stand out and have a good outcome. In addition to designing, one must have a vision of the future, believe and act as a leader. This will be a great differential for people to admire their work more and more.
But the hint is: Architecture is a sensational career and if you have love for what you do, it will take all those "pisses" out of hand. The important thing is the effort, the personal improvement and the learning that the day to day will be in charge of teaching.
