Ala Hason
Ala Hason
HKS Architects Associate Principal, Director of MENA Region.
Ala brings a global perspective to all of his work. His influence can be seen around the world though projects in Kuwait, Syria, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, Bahrain, Qatar, Lebanon and China, as well as several large scale projects in the U.S. After attending college in Egypt, he became fascinated by the pyramids and gained a respect for the architecture in the ancient cities of Mesopotamia and Egypt. Today, he believes a successful project is one that is impacted by local context and heritage. By keeping this in mind, Ala is determined to continuously learn about a client’s business and how architecture can help them achieve their goals. “The possibilities are endless; there is always something new to learn,” he said.

Sven Shockey
SmithGroupJJR
Architecture really is a multi-headed beast," states Sven, and he means that in a good way."It's why I went into the field. I like that each project has untapped potential. But I did not anticipate that I would be working on so many different types and scales of projects, which I really enjoy." As senior designer in the Washington, DC Workplace Studio, Sven has contributed to a variety ofmixed-use, commercial and institutional projects from DC to India. Perhaps endless untappedpotential is what draws Sven to music, too. He plays and listens to music as a creative outlet and,if not for architecture, would have pursued a career in sound design. He even has a desire to master the oud,an obscure pear-shaped stringed instrument with origins in the Mideast and North Africa.Other cultures clearly pique his interest: If he could go anywhere in the world,"I would take a private train across China with my family, with tours, hiking, and feasting along the way.
